A MAN B&W 6L23/30H engine, installed in a vessel managed by a well-known shipping business based in Dubai, UAE, had damage to the crankshaft while the vessel was near Singapore. As the vessel had to continue its cruise from Singapore anchorage to Taiwan, rapid repair was necessary to avoid operating delay and the exorbitant cost of dry-docking.

Engine and electromagnetic particle inspection crankshaft Details
We got the specialists on board, and they did a thorough inspection of the six crankpins before they started the repair. The inspection consisted of dimension measurement, magnetic particle inspection (MPI) for crack detection, hardness testing, and a full assessment of the crankpin condition. Dimensional inspection showed that Crankpin No. 2 exhibited
severe wear and an ovality of 1.18 mm. The other crankpins showed very mild wear.
After reading the inspection report, our engineers decided to grind crankpin No. 2 to 2.00 mm undersize. The other crankpins (Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6) were restored by grinding to a 0.50 mm undersize. The machining was done utilizing our portable onsite crankshaft grinding machine designed exclusively to do in situ crankshaft maintenance onboard boats.
Precision Grinding Results
The dimensional accuracy was verified by re-measuring each crankpin after it was ground and polished. Final inspection showed the crankpins were restored to the specified tolerances. The final ovality was around 0.02 mm. The high degree of machining accuracy ensured correct bearing contact, enhanced lubrication, and reliable engine performance following reassembly.
