In Situ Crankshaft Repair of Sulzer 6ZAL 40S Engine at Lagos Port, Nigeria
RA Power Solutions was contacted by an established shipping company based in Lagos, Nigeria, for in situ crankshaft repair of the Sulzer 6ZAL 40S main engine. The engine was damaged at crankpin No. 1 and the thrust bearing diameter, and needed emergency repair onboard the vessel. Our skilled specialists flew to the port in Lagos, Nigeria, where they performed a thorough check and successfully returned the crankshaft to the required specifications without removing it from the engine.
The major technical details of the crankshaft are given below:
Action Taken for In Situ Crankshaft Repair of Sulzer 6ZAL 40S Engine at Lagos Port, Nigeria
After arriving at Lagos Port, Nigeria, our technicians carried out a detailed inspection of the damaged crankpin and thrust bearing diameter of the Sulzer 6ZAL 40S engine. The inspection confirmed that the crankpin had previously been repaired and was already 1.0 mm undersized.
Inspection Results
The following measurements were recorded during the inspection:
Crankpin Diameter
Minimum diameter: 348.61 mm
Maximum diameter: 349.00 mm
Thrust Bearing Diameter
Minimum diameter: 349.46 mm
Maximum diameter: 350.00 mm
In addition to dimensional measurements, essential parameters including hardness, crack detection, and crankshaft deflection were thoroughly inspected and found to be within the manufacturer's specified limits. However, localised damage, scoring, and deep line marks were observed on both the crankpin and the thrust bearing diameter. Based on these findings, in situ crankshaft repair was recommended and carried out to restore the crankshaft to the required operating condition without removing it from the engine.
Action taken by RA Power Solutions
Crankpin number 1 was fixed by in situ grinding, and the final diameter was maintained between 346.98 mm and 347.00 mm. The ovality achieved in this process was 0.02 mm, and the crankpin finished 3.0 mm undersized, meeting the specified repair requirements.
The thrust bearing diameter was also ground and repaired. The final diameter was maintained between 349.16 mm and 349.18 mm, being 0.80 mm undersized as recommended by the manufacturer of the engine.
The entire repair process was done on board of the vessel through the use of in-situ crankshaft grinding equipment, which helped in avoiding the removal of the crankshaft and saving the vessel's downtime.
